The tension inside Downing Street tonight must be at fever pitch.

There have been major developments today on two separate investigations led by two different women.

The prime minister could be hours away from being presented with the civil service report into the parties in and around Number 10.

Sue Gray's inquiry is complete - its findings compiled in black and white.

And those findings have prompted Scotland Yard to announce it too is now investigating whether there was law breaking.

A new name entered the fray. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jane Connors of Scotland Yard. She's been chosen by her boss, the Commisioner, Dame Cressida Dick, to lead the police inquiry.

The prime minister said he welcomed Scotland Yard's investigation and hoped it would give the public the clarity it needs.
